The state of Ohio has distributed a record 231,929 kits so far this year in a concerted effort to reduce overdose death, which reached a record 5,017 in 2020. The most recent effort supplied naloxone community organizations for the first time, bringing the naloxone closer to people who use drugs and are at risk of overdose death.

Death rates among White residents has risen in 2021, too, although at a more moderate rate. The racial gap (and gender gap) in overdose death needs immediate attention.

Most Ohio drug courts focus heavily on abstinence-only treatment approaches, raising the question of whether they contribute to our state’s high overdose death rates.
