Southeastern counties suffering worst
Scioto County remains No. 1 in overdose death

These counties have Ohio’s highest overdose deaths rates so far in 2022.

The ranking are based on the 1,297 overdose deaths reported in the Ohio Department of health mortality data as of July 15, 2022.

Scioto County, home to Portsmouth, has had Ohio’s highest overdose death rates fairly consistently for the last four years. Overall, Ohio’s Appalachian counties have suffered the worst levels of overdose death and continue to do so in 2022.

The urban counties of Mahoning (Youngstown), Clark (Springfield) and Montgomery (Dayton) also have extremely high death rates.
