Ohio suffered a record 5,018 overdose deaths in 2020 and is on a pace in 2021 to replicate (and maybe exceed) that horrific death toll.
The following chart shows the 25 Ohio counties that suffered the worst overdose death rates in 2020, according to a Harm Reduction Ohio analysis of official Ohio Department of Health mortality data. (Death rates are per 100,000 residents. Ohio has 88 counties.) Below the list showing death rates for last year, we show the counties that have the worst death rates so far in 2021.
The drug war continues to claim the lives of Ohio residents in horrific numbers. As we observe another Overdose Awareness Day, we need to be honest with ourselves: it’s time to end the deadly folly of the drug war. Our loved ones should not have died in vain.
